Statement: Purple Heart Commemorative Coin Designs A Tribute To Our Heroes

U.S. Army Col. Russell O. Vernon (Ret.), the executive director of the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, offered praise for the designs: "These coins are an historic tribute to the courage displayed by our our nation's 1.8 million Purple Heart recipients. Our service members don't see themselves as heroes, but they are proof that the freedom we cherish comes at a cost. The designs created by the Mint's artists and sculptors include an array of elements that strongly the history of the Purple Heart, and the service and sacrifice made by Purple Heart recipients. It is such a meaningful tribute and the surcharge attached to each coin will help the National Purple Heart Honor Mission continue to tell our heroes' stories of valor to future generations of Americans.”
