Statement: Purple Heart Commemorative Coin Designs A Tribute To Our Heroes

(NEW YORK, NY) - On Veterans Day, Purple Heart recipients from across generations joined officials from the United States Mint and leadership from the National Purple Heart Honor Mission to unveil an historic tribute to our nation's heroes. The first-of-its-kind commemorative coin series will be issued by the U.S. Mint in 2022 and includes a $5 gold coin, $1 silver coin and half-dollar clad coin.

U.S. Army Col. Russell O. Vernon (Ret.), the executive director of the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, offered praise for the designs: "These coins are an historic tribute to the courage displayed by our nation's 1.8 million Purple Heart recipients. Our service members don't see themselves as heroes, but they are proof that the freedom we cherish comes at a cost. The designs created by the Mint's artists and sculptors include an array of elements that strongly represent the history of the Purple Heart, and the service and sacrifice made by Purple Heart recipients. It is such a meaningful tribute and the surcharge attached to each coin will help the National Purple Heart Honor Mission continue to tell our heroes' stories of valor to future generations of Americans.

"On behalf of our Purple Heart recipients and the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, I want to thank the amazing team at the U.S. Mint for their incredible work. We also want to thank all the members of Congress for their bi-partisan support of this historic tribute."

Coins will go on sale through the United States Mint in 2022. Those looking to receive more information can visit www.PurpleHeartCoins.org.
