Times Herald Record: House Passes Bill to Benefit Purple Heart Museum in Orange County
The House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill on Thursday that would authorize the West Point mint to create three commemorative coins that would feature the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor and raise money for the nonprofit that supports it.
The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-Cold Spring, would authorize a $5 gold piece, a $1 silver piece and a half-dollar clad coin that would be sold in 2021 only. Each would be sold with a surcharge that would generate up to $9.5 million to cover the minting cost and fund the Purple Heart Patriot Project, a program that will sponsor trips to the hall for Purple Heart recipients from around the country.
