PRESS RELEASE - Holiday Shopping Alert: Final Chance to Buy Limited Edition Coins Honoring Purple Heart Heroes from the U.S. Mint

Purple Heart Commemorative Coins Support National Tribute and Education Programs to Honor America’s Combat Wounded and Killed in Action

(NEWBURGH, NY) – This holiday season will mark the last time Americans will be able to purchase the nation’s first and only official commemorative coins honoring our Purple Heart recipients. The coins, minted only in 2022 have proven to be incredibly popular with Purple Heart recipients, coin collectors, veterans and the general public.

Sales from the U.S. Mint will terminate on December 28, and the U.S. Mint is offering FREE and reduced shipping for the holidays (conditions apply). Those who order by December 15 will receive their coins by Christmas.

The legal tender, Silver, Clad and Gold coins tell the story of the Purple Heart and the sacrifice of America’s combat-wounded and killed-in-action through a series of powerfully detailed images.

“These coins beautifully tell the story of courage and sacrifice made by the more than 1.8 million heroes who have been awarded the Purple Heart,” said Col. Russell O. Vernon (Ret.), the executive director of the National Purple Heart Honor Mission. “Our Purple Heart recipients don't see themselves as heroes, but they are proof that the freedom we cherish comes at a cost.”

All three denominations of coins are still available individually, along with a limited number of 3-coin sets. The U.S. Mint coin program supports the work of the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, which ensures our heroes’ sacrifices are never forgotten through educational and tribute programming.

“These coins are truly fitting tribute to our heroes, can make a unique and powerful gift this holiday season for someone who appreciates that freedom isn’t free. There is a limited supply of coins remaining, and we want to ensure these are sold out so we can continue to support our Purple Heart heroes,” Vernon continued.

Coins are on sale through December 28 and can be purchased by visiting the Mint’s website at https://catalog.usmint.gov/purple-heart-commemorative-coin/. Those looking to receive more information can also visit www.PurpleHeartCoins.org.

Earlier this month, the Honor Mission announced the opening of nominations for its 2023 Purple Heart Patriot Project, which will be funded in part through the funds raised by sales of the commemorative coins. This annual tribute program is a multi-day salute to service that brings Purple Heart recipients from across the nation to New York to visit the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and other sights associated with the nation’s oldest and most distinguished service award.
