The four-day Patriot Project Mission will feature visits to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; historic Washington’s Headquarters, where the Badge of Military Merit originated in 1782; the Statue of Liberty; and a private tour of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor – the museum dedicated to our nation’s combat wounded and killed in action.
On Saturday, August 19 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. legendary Hudson Valley musical groups will reunite for an exclusive one-day performance at the Silk Factory, 299 Washington Street in Newburgh.
Anyone can nominate a Purple Heart recipient by completing the nomination form on the Honor Mission’s website: www.purpleheartmission.org/patriot-project. Nominations should include a short description (up to 350 words) of why their hero is deserving of this special recognition and should focus not only on their military service but their post-military life including community service, charitable work and career.
Nominations will be accepted until December 31. Nominees may not be self-nominated.
Celebrated on each August 7, National Purple Heart Day offers Americans a special opportunity to say “Thank You” to the nearly two million brave men and women who fought for our nation’s freedom, and bear the physical scars of war.
The National Purple Heart Honor Mission led the historic effort to develop the nation’s first U.S. Minted commemorative coin honoring our Purple Heart heroes. These limited-edition legal tender coins, unveiled on Veterans Day, will be available in three denominations - $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half-dollar clad coins – and will be produced by the United States Mint and available to the public in 2022.
Join the National Purple Heart Honor Mission as we pay tribute to our 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project Mission honorees with a public “Welcome Home” rally. The event will pay tribute to all of our 2021 honorees - including those who are not longer with us.
The rally will also include a special Genesis Legacy Medal presentation ceremony for Purple Heart recipient and media personality Johnny Joey Jones and Tunnel to Towers Chairman Frank Siller.
To salute these brave Americans service and sacrifice, the National Purple Heart Honor Mission hosts a national tribute ceremony each August 7. The event offers Purple Heart recipients the chance to gather together to share personal narratives about the true cost of freedom and what it takes to protect our great nation.
Derl Horn will share an exciting, powerful and true story of his memories of being drafted into the Marine Corps during the heights of the Vietnam War.

Marine Sgt. John Peck survived an IED during the War on Terror that left him with a traumatic brain injury, amnesia, and cost him his marriage. He survived another three years later, one that left him with three and a half limbs missing. He’s one of only two living people to survive the flesh-eating fungus he contracted in recovery at Walter Reed, one that left him as a quadruple amputee. And that’s only the beginning of his story.
What followed was a recovery nothing short of miraculous. With resilience and the help of advocates like actor and philanthropist Gary Sinise, FOX’s Jennifer Griffin, and Bill O’Reilly, John would use a specialized “Action Trackchair” wheelchair and a newly-built SmartHome to get a third lease on life. In 2016, Peck underwent a groundbreaking bilateral arm transplant, receiving two new arms. To date, the surgery has been successful.
Sgt. Peck will speak about the triumphs and tribulations.
